Observation Narrative
Plot location: wooded slope 0.4 miles SE of SR 49 bridge over the Nottoway River.
An east-facing lower slope with post-logging mixed hardwoods. This stand regenerated several or more decades ago. Oaks (Quercus alba, Q. rubra, Q. montana, mostly from stump sprouts) and Liriodendron tulipifera constitute the overstory, while Carya spp. Are more frequent in lower strata. This stand has rather sparse shrub and herb layers despite reasonably favorable site conditions; the woody vines Parthenocissus quinquefolia and Vitis rotundifolia contribute the bulk of the herb-layer cover.
